Heather Boon

Heather Boon, BScPhm, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto.  She is co-directs IN-CAM (the Canadian Interdisciplinary Network for Complementary and Alternative Medicine Research) and is the current Chair of Health Canada’s Expert Advisory Committee for Natural Health Products.  Her primary research interests are patients’ use of complementary/alternative medicine, the safety and efficacy of natural health products and complementary/alternative medicine regulation and policy issues.


Michelle Boudreau

Director general, Natural Health Products Directorate, Health Canada

Ms. Michelle Boudreau has been the Director General of the Natural Health Products Directorate (NHPD) of Health Canada since September 2008.

Ms. Boudreau’s extensive experience in the area of health products include serving as legal counsel to NHPD, where she provided instrumental guidance in the development of the NHP Regulations, and participated in NHPD's cross-country consultations with industry and consumers.  Ms. Boudreau also served as legal counsel to the Therapeutic Products Directorate (TPD) and the Inspectorate for a number of years through the Department of Justice before joining the Health Protection Branch in 2005, as Acting Associate Director General of the Inspectorate. Most recently, Ms. Boudreau was the Executive Advisor in the Deputy Minister's Office prior to her current role in the NHPD.

Ms. Boudreau has both a degree in law (University of Ottawa) and pharmacy (Dalhousie University).


Tannis Jurgens

College of Pharmacy, Dalhousie University

Tannis Jurgens BSc (Pharm), MSc (Pharmacognosy), PhD (Pharmacognosy)is an associate professor in medicinal chemistry and natural products chemistry at the College of Pharmacy, Dalhousie University. As a pharmacy educator and researcher, she has focused on evaluating the quality of evidence of efficacy of natural health products (NHPs) as well as drug interactions with NHPs. Dr Jurgens has a particular interest in the use of NHPs in women’s health and has published systematic reviews on the efficacy of NHPs in osteoporosis and premenstrual syndrome.


Farid Wassef, Pharmacist, Certified Clinical Nutritionist, Functional Medicine Practitioner

Since 1989 Farid Wassef has been providing fee-for-service patient consultations, which involves integrating the principles of health promotion, nutrition and natural health products along with pharmaceutical care in Stouffville, Ontario. He has authored a number of peer-reviewed articles, continuing education courses, and served on various editorial and advisory boards. As well, he has provided live presentations to healthcare professionals across North America outlining evidence-based treatment options for common respiratory diseases, chronic inflammatory disorders, and age-related diseases.

He coauthored the book, Breaking the Age Barrier (Strategies for Optimal Health, Energy, and Longevity). He has appeared on CBC Radio One, CTV, Global, the Health Discovery Channel’s Medical Hot Seat, TVO’s More to Life and CTS TV’s On the Line as an expert in diet, natural health products, disease prevention, and the safe and effective use of prescription and over-the counter medicines.      

In 2003, Farid received Pharmacy Post’s Drug Store Outstanding Service Award for Patient Self-Care and the Pharmacy Practice Commitment to Care Award in Patient Care. In 2004 he was honoured with the Ontario Pharmacists Association Mortar Pestle Award for Merit. And recently he was honoured as the 2006 Canadian Pharmacist of the Year by the CPhA for his excellence in patient care.  


Carolyn Whiskin BSc, Phm.

Carolyn Whiskin, BSc. Phm, graduated from the faculty of pharmacy at the University of Toronto in 1986. She practices pharmacy at Brant Arts Dispensary in Burlington. Carolyn specializes in women's health and pain and is a certified menopause practitioner with the North American Menopause Society. She is also a compounding specialist.  Carolyn has been meeting with patients by appointment for several years to develop treatment regimens which combine and natural health products and traditional medications.

During Carolyn’s career she has helped to write the initial first year communications course for pharmacy students at U of T, has been a lecturer and workshop facilitator and worked at St. Joseph's Hospital and Mc Master University Medical Centre in Hamilton creating educational programs. She initiated and is a current member of the pharmacist/physician collaboration committee in Burlington and is a member of their Diabetes Collaborative Working Group.

As a motivational speaker, Carolyn gives lectures and workshops across Canada to physicians, pharmacists, nurses, family health teams and the public on various therapeutic topics and areas of personal growth. She has been a guest on radio and television.

Carolyn has won national awards, including the Pharmacy Practice "Commitment to Care Award" in the area of patient care (2005).
